Sutter Hosts Battle of the Buttes VB Tournament

SUTTER, CA (MPG) - Fierce matches between multiple area teams marked this season’s Battle of Buttes held Saturday, Sept. 7 in Sutter.

The Tournament is a preseason event that has brought players to the court for at least the last two decades. Sixteen teams would volley for the championship: Sutter, Durham, Marysville, Lindhurst, Chico, Yuba City, Pierce, Las Plumas, Bear River, Willows, Dixon, East Nicolaus, Wheatland and Red Bluff.

Regarding our area teams, the following stats were reported and listed by match on MaxPreps, not tournament brackets, and may not follow teams seeding in the bracket.

The Sutter High School Varsity Huskies took on the Marysville Indians first, winning the match 2-0.

Sutter logged wins over the Lindhurst Blazers 2-0, Durham Trojans 2-0, and Willows Honkers 2-0.

It would not be until the lady Huskies came up against the East Nicolaus Spartans that they would first loss of the tournament against their local rivals. The Huskies would play the no-score sets of the tournament while the Spartans took two wins.

Yuba City Honkers would take on the Pierce bears for a loss of 1-2 during the Sutter tournament, and later that day, as they took on the Chico Panthers, the Honkers would sustain another loss of 0-2 Panthers.

The Pirates would pit the ladies of Wheatland against East Nicolaus, and although the Pirates put numbers on the scoreboard, it wouldn’t be enough to keep the Spartans from securing the win 2-1.

The Honkers kept the River Valley Falcons from taking flight during their match, with a win of 2-0. Lindhurst would lose to the Falcon 0-2 and the Dixon Rams would take a loss to River Valley, and Bear River would shut the Falcons down with a win 0-2.

During the Silver bracket, Lindhurst lost to River Valley in the first round of play. During the Silver Bracket semi-final round, Marysville would fall to Wheatland. River Valley would fight through the tournament, where they would fall to Yuba City in the semi-final round. Yuba City would finish second, and Wheatland, defeated Marysville, Yuba City, and could be considered the Silver Bracket Champions.

Sutter would lose to East Nicolaus during the Gold Bracket. The E. Nicolaus Spartans would take the title of Champion, beating Chico in the final match.
