GRIDLEY, CA (MPG) - Since 1881, AAUW has been the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls.
Tech Trek began in 1998 and is being expanded across the U.S. Tech Trek is a one-week camp held at a university with STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) workshops based on discovery and exploration in those fields. It is designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in young women who are entering the eighth grade.
Girls attend Tech Trek camps hosted by AAUW California on scholarships provided by AAUW members, generous individuals, and community organizations. From participating middle schools in our area, seventh grade science and/or math teachers recommend camper candidates who must pass through an extensive qualification process that includes an application, an essay, and a personal interview.
Two 7th grade girls attending Sycamore Middle School, Lyana Garcia and Molly Nichols, have been selected for scholarships to attend Tech Trek. Being selected for a Tech Trek Scholarship is a great honor. Lyana and Molly are commended for their outstanding involvement in school and their community as well as academic achievement. It is our hope that they will continue to study STEM subjects and ultimately pursue a career in these fields.
Lyana and Molly will be attending UC Davis for one week this summer where they will have the opportunity to stay in dorm rooms, participate in hands-on workshops, and meet other young ladies from across northern California. It is an exciting week where lifelong memories and friendships will be developed.
During 2020 and 2021, camps at UC Davis were canceled due to COVID-19 and girls were unable to attend. It is hoped that all available local scholarships will be used in 2023.
